Fail-Safe یک طراحی و ویژگی سیستم است که در صورت به وجود آمدن خرابی در تجهیزات یا پیش آمدن موقعیت‌های خطرناک در فرآیند، به گونه‌ای پاسخ می‌دهد که کمترین آسیب به تجهیزات، محیط زیست و افراد وارد شود. کنترلرهای Fail-Safe باید دارای گواهینامه SIL باشند. عبارت SIL مخفف شده کلمه Safety Integrity Level به معنی سطح یکپارچگی ایمنی است. SIL براساس استاندارد IEC 61508 برای ریسک‌ها و خطر‌های موجود در فرآیند درجه‌بندی می‌شود و هرچه ریسک و خطر بالاتر باشد درجه SIL نیز بالاتر است. SIL از درجه 1 تا 4 درجه‌بندی می‌شود.
انواع سیستم‌های Fail-Safe به شرح زیر می‌باشند:
High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS)
سیستم‌های HIPPS برای جلوگیری از فشار بیش از حد در کارخانه‌هایی همانند کارخانه شیمیایی یا پالایشگاه‌ها استفاده می‌شود. این سیستم منبع با فشار بالا را قبل اینکه فشار آن از حد بیشینه طراحی فراتر رود، می‌بندد. بنابراین با مانع شدن مابین بخش پرفشار و کم فشار مانع از انفجار خط لوله یا منبع می‌شود.
Burner Management System (BMS)
BMS را می‌توان در صنایعی همانند نفت و گاز، نیروگاه‌های برق، صنایع شیمیایی یا هر فرآیند دیگری که از مشعل صنعتی، کوره، دیگ بخار و هر تجهیزی که از شعله در آن استفاده می‌شود، به کار برد. این سیستم می‌تواند شعله‌های آتش را با آشکارسازهای شعله نظارت کند، هنگامی که سنسورها شعله را تشخیص نمی‌دهند یا شرایط عملیاتی را ناایمن تشخیص می‌دهند BMS به Actuator ها (محرک‌ها) دستور می‌دهد که جریان سوخت را متوقف کنند تا از پیش آمدن حوادث ناگوار جلوگیری کند.
Emergency Shutdown (ESD)
سیستم خاموشی اضطراری یا ESD برای به حداقل رساندن عواقب و آسیب‌های احتمالی موقعیت‌های اضطراری مربوط به سیل کنترل نشده (Uncontrolled flooding)، فرار هیدروکربن‌ها و وقوع آتش‌سوزی در مناطق دارای هیدروکربن که ممکن است خطرناک باشند، طراحی شده است. ESD می‌تواند به طور خودکار یا به صورت دستی توسط اپراتور از طریق دکمه‌های فشاری روی پنل شروع شود. ESD تمام تجهیزات مربوط به فرآیند را خاموش و ایزوله می‌کند.
Anti-Surge Protection System for Compressors
کمپرسورهای سانتریفیوژی و محوری می‌توانند شرایط مخربی را تجربه کنند که به آن موج (Surge) می‌گویند. موج زمانی رخ می‌دهد که مقدار گازی که کمپرسور می‌خواهد فشرده کند برای اندازه کمپرسور کافی نباشد و تیغه‌ها توانایی خود را برای انتقال انرژی از شفت به سیال از دست بدهند و باعث جریان معکوس گاز می‌شود. بنابراین کمپرسورها شامل شیرهای ضد موج هستند که در شرایط تشخیص جریان کم، گاز را از تخلیه به مکش بازیافت کنند و همچنین با توجه به الگوریتم ویژه جلوگیری از موج برای حفاظت موثر از کمپرسور باید زمان پاسخ کنترل‌کننده بالا باشد.

سیستم‌های آتش و گاز (F&G) برای نظارت بر شرایط محیطی و تشخیص تغییراتی که می‌تواند موجب آتش‌سوزی اولیه یا نشت گاز مرتبط باشد، طراحی شده است. اکثر اوقات سیستم F&G توسط یک یا چند پنل کنترلی تشکیل می‌شود که هرکدام با آشکارسازهای فیلد، واحدهای سیگنالی و عملگرها (Actuator) به هم متصل هستند. عملکردهایی که معمولاً یک سیستم F&G برای انجام آن فراخوانی می‌شود عبارتند از: نظارت (مانیتورینگ)، اعلام هشدار، تریپ و اعمال کردن دستورات.
